A Brief History of Ducati® Motorcycles

Motorcycles have only been around for a little over a century, and Ducati has been manufacturing them for almost 80 years, which is quite impressive when you think about it. Following the company’s humble start in electronics, the Ducati® motorcycle brand became extremely successful and flourishes today, thanks to constant innovation and superior manufacturing techniques.
 

Meet the Ducati Brothers

Societá Scientifica Radio Brevetti Ducati was founded in 1926 by Antonio Ducati and his sons, Marcello, Bruno, and Adriano. As their name might suggest, the three Ducati brothers were Italian, and they situated their company in the city of Bologna.

Initially, the company manufactured radio components for the new technology of radio, but production was halted by World War II. Germany occupied the Ducati factory in 1943 and sadly, Allied bombing destroyed the entire plant in 1944.
 

The End of the War

After the war ended, the Ducati brothers thought about their financial woes and struggles and decided to produce something a little less delicate than radio parts. When the Allies gave Bologna’s mayor Giuseppe Dozza a dozen trucks, the Ducati brothers decided that four-stroke engines would be an excellent product to manufacture.

Ducati made their first motorcycle by improving upon prior designs made by Aldo Farinelli during the war. The Cucciolo rolled off assembly lines in 1946 and became extremely popular throughout the country. By 1949, Ducati was ready to release its next motorcycle, the Ducati 60. Their motorcycle division split off into Ducati Meccanica SpA in 1954, following the Ducati brothers’ sale of their business to the Italian government.
